What do Sugar, Carbs and Yeast have to do with Nail Fungus?
It is no surprise that a diet high in sugar is bad for your health. Did you know that high sugar diets also make us much more susceptible to fungal infections? So what does sugar have to do with Toenail Fungus? Well before we go into that you must first understand what yeast is.

Yeasts are living micro organisms which are actually a type of fungus. There are about 1500 species of yeast and some of them are always present in the human body. Some of these species of yeast can alternate between a dormant “yeast phase” and an active “hyphal phase” (your active fungal infection). As yeast begins to grow, microscopic sprouts know as hyphae extend from the yeast and are able to penetrate human tissue! If you have ever tried to trim away at your toenail fungus with a pair of clippers and cut yourself by accident it is because the fungus has penetrated your nail bed. When you trim the fungus you are taking pieces of skin with it!

There are a number of factors that contribute to an overgrowth of yeast in the human body. The most common ones are:

-A diet high in sugar and carbohydrates
-Prolonged use of antibiotics
-Illnesses that are damaging to the immune system AIDS/Diabetes

Anyone who has baked a homemade loaf of bread understands the relationship between Yeast and Sugar. To put it simple, Yeast feeds on Sugar! When you make bread you mix a packet of yeast, sugar and warm water. Immediately the Yeast begins to breakdown and absorbs the sugar, it continues to eat and grow. You fuel the fire even greater by adding milk, flour (carbohydrates) and other ingredients for the Yeast to feast on. The Yeast will eventually spread through the entire dough until it swells thus creating your loaf of bread.

Now what do you think happens when yeast is able to grow in the human body?

There are a number of conditions that can develop from a diet high in sugar and one of the problems is nail fungus. Sugar will flow right into your bloodstream and supply your nail fungus with all the food it needs to keep growing. Fungus likes a dark, warm and moist environment to grow. Your shoes and socks already provide the optimal environment for growth; don’t add food to the equation! One important note to remember is that carbohydrates are converted to sugar in the digestion process. This means you need to limit your consumption of high carb foods as well.

Some of these foods include:

-breads
-pasta
-potatoes

Antibiotics are also another contributor to the overgrowth of yeast in the body. Antibiotics kill off the “good” bacteria known as probiotics which keep yeast overgrowth in check; the most common and well known probiotics are Lactobacillus Acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum. When you take antibiotics it kills these good bacteria as well as the bad but does not harm the yeasts; basically you are giving the yeast a “get out of jail free” card. This is why so many people on antibiotics will get a yeast infection, and we all know a very common condition that can develop from and overgrowth of yeast in the body…(drum roll) Nail Fungus!
